How you go about your morning sets the tone for your day. Do you wake up and hit the snooze 5 times? Well if you think about it you are literally trying to postpone and resist your life. That’s not a great message to send to the universe first thing in the morning. In this blog I will share with you my personal morning routine which I designed to give myself the best possible start to the day!

For a long time I woke up and instantly began telling myself a story that went a little like this: “Dear god no, surely its not morning already?! Ayana fed literally like 1000 times last night. Great, we don’t have any food for breakfast. So unfair that I have to stay home all day. Omg and its a Monday so Chris wont be home until late tonight. Today is going to be longggg”.

I knew that waking up like this wasn’t helping anything but I thought it was merely stating truths (okay she didn’t feed 1000 times but you get me). When I began to understand just how much these thoughts were ensuring that this would be my reality, I knew I had to make some changes.

So I wanted to share with you how I began to reshape my morning and in turn transform my life! But before I get into that, I want to talk to you about my inner bitch.

You know that voice inside your head that puts everyone else down including yourself. The judgmental, rude and stubborn voice. The one that finds some sick joy in those moments you feel miserable. The one that tries and justifies your shitty attitude and behaviour by blaming everyone around you?

Sound familiar at all?

Well to begin with, your inner bitch is going to be mad as hell and looking for every excuse to stop you from making positive changes in your life. She wants to keep you small. But you have to persevere. You have to make the commitment and stick to it. Eventually as your inner bitch becomes smothered in loving thoughts she will retreat.

Lets get into it

My morning is divided into four main sections. Before I get into that I will mention, that if you don’t already know, I have a 16 month old daughter. For the first year or so of her life I woke up when she decided she wanted to begin her day. For me to work this routine into my life it means waking up before she does – and yes that sometimes meant getting up at 4am.

Whatever it takes for me to have some time to myself, I will do it.

You might think that sounds unrealistic and maybe a little crazy (especially if you are a mama who wakes up a lot throughout the night, or someone who works all day). But doing this creates time and it makes you more productive. Most importantly it keeps you sane! (I also recommend throwing your TV out and going to bed early  )

My Routine

4.30am: Wake Up.

  1. First affirmation: ‘I had the perfect amount of sleep, exactly what I needed in order to have a great day.’
  2. Brush teeth, Rinse face, Big Smile in the mirror
  3. Drink lots of water

I like to set up a nice space with cushions, and sometimes a candle and incense. But all you really need is a quiet space to do some gentle stretches. This doesn’t need to be anything too crazy just whatever feels good. You really do not need to overthink this.

You can stand up and reach your arms up as high as you can, stretching out your entire body. You can make gentle circular motions with your wrists and feet – just whatever feels good.

If you would like some guidance you can find lots of videos on YouTube, here is a really short and simple yoga flow to get you started.

I also enjoy doing self-massage, particularly on my hands, feet and calves. I use a little coconut oil and gently massage myself as I create a mental list of all the things that I am grateful my body allows me to do (Walking. Writing. Holding hands. Cuddling my daughter. ect ect ect)

2. Silence

Sitting in stillness. Get into a really comfy position – use lots of cushions and props, its very important that you feel comfortable.

Its so simple and yet an incredibly difficult thing for us to do. It does get easier with practice. I really believe in order to receive inspiration from the universe we need to create space in our minds otherwise it just gets lost in the ocean of thoughts.

For me being in silence is a way for me to create some inner space and clarity. The more thoughts I have the more likely it is for me to get sucked down a vortex of negative thoughts.

What I do:

I like to picture my mind as the sky and my thoughts as the clouds. Sometimes my mind might be very cloudy (okay sometimes there’s a raging bloody storm). Sitting in silence is all about letting the clouds pass so that you can feel the warmth of the sun – to experience a clear mind. Its so important to do this in the morning, before your day begins and gets really busy. The easiest way for me to clear my mind is by focusing on my breathing. Becoming very aware of my inhilation and exhilations, the rise and fall of my chest. It can be helpful to begin a count. I usually inhale for a count of 6, hold for a count of 2 and then exhale for a count of 6. By focusing on your breathe you do not become as easily distracted from your mind and you are also connecting in with your body, and life force energy.

On days when I am finding it particularly difficult to let go of thoughts I say to myself

This helps me to relax and reminds me that I have the whole day ahead of me. I want to make it really clear that it might take a lifetime for you to master this, maybe you never will. But that’s not necessarily the point.

Its a practice.

Okay, just one more point – When you allow yourself to just be, to sit, without distraction you might notice some seemingly ‘random’ thoughts come up. You might find yourself thinking about something you did in grade 2. You might get emotional, you might feel uncomfortable. Its not always pretty, but whatever you feel is right.

Don’t try to shove those thoughts back down.

Acknowledge them, then let them go – let them float away. Another thought might come up straight away. That’s okay. Say hello to it and then release it too.

3. Write

This changes everyday but for me, I think the most effective way to write (when it comes to journaling anyway) is not in a factual ‘this is my exact reality right now’ sort of way.

Its much more effective to write your life as you wish it to be.

Write about your dreams and desires, the happiness you will experience, the success, the love. Write in a way that makes you feel like smiling. Everyday my journaling is different, just sitting down and starting without putting much thought into it works best for me.

Journaling is such a beautiful way to reflect on your life – I love looking back on entries from a year ago and seeing how much I have grown – or even more amazing – reminding myself of dreams that I manifested!

Visualise Your Absolute Dream Day…

..from the moment you wake up. Then begin writing in detail how it plays out.

  • What are you wearing?
  • What do you eat for breakfast?
  • Where are you?
  • Who else is there?
  • What do you do that day?
  • How do you feel?
  • What do you look like?

Go into as much detail as you can and write it like it is your life right now.

Manifesting A Van Life…

It really does blow my mind how powerful this can be. When I first began this morning routine in my unit at the Gold Coast, I would write about waking up in a van with Chris and Ayana. I would do yoga and swim in the ocean and eat a tray of mangoes. It literally all became true.

Then from my van I wrote about waking up and exploring Bali.. that became true also.

Now I write about our adventures in Hawaii… so stay tuned

*TIP: Have fun with your writing. Do not get caught up worrying about how it will happen. Don’t worry about that just do it for the joy of doing it, get creative.  The most important thing is that it makes you feel good, have fun with it!

4. Affirmations

Next I like to write out my affirmations and then say them aloud a few times.

It felt strange when I first began doing this but now it feels really empowering, especially because I have seen first hand how effective this is! If you are new to this then an affirmation is a statement you can say (or write) in order to strengthen your belief that it is/or will become true. This gravitates you towards the action you need to take in order to manifest the desired affirmation into your reality.

You can create affirmations for any area of your life you want to make changes in. You might focus on money, your career, relationships, health.

I write my affirmations as if my desires are already my reality. I have worked a lot on changing limiting beliefs I had in regards to money so here are a few of my personal affirmations that I say nearly every day:

  • I am open and receptive to unlimited opportunities and avenues of income.
  • I am worthy and deserving of success in all areas of my life.
  • I am a magnet for prosperity. Money flows into my life just like the air that I breathe.

These are just a few examples that I hope will give you some inspiration to write your own. My affirmations change over time depending on where i feel I need to focus my energy. Although, one usually always remains constant and that’s a statement affirming my worthiness.

So many of our beliefs that limit us boil down to the underlying thought that we are not enough just as we are. Its an incredibly damaging lie and one of the most important areas of our life we need to address.

**TIP: I find an affirmation that I love and save it as the lock screen on my phone – that way I am reminded of it numerous times throughout the day.

So that it is!

This entire morning routine can be tailored to suit the time you have available and can easily be completed in 30 minutes. I usually put the kettle on, have a tea and enjoy whatever remaining time I have before Ayana wakes up and life gets really really full on again.

NOTE: Sometimes inner bitch will try to get all dramatic if you don’t get to finish everything, or if you run out of time or if you don’t know what to write. Tell inner bitch to CHILL, its cool. There are no rules with this. Some mornings everything will just flow and others might be more difficult. Just thank yourself for prioritising your happiness and growth, knowing its not always smooth sailing!

How does this all tie into changing your life!?

Well…when you start your day focusing your attention on what you want in life, when you visualise this and affirm this, you are attracting it towards you.

When I woke up thinking about how hard the day was going to be I made sure that this was the truth, even if it wasn’t what I wanted.

If you want to make changes in your life you cannot focus on all that you hate about your life as that only ensures it will stick around. Creating a morning routine that is focused on what you truly want will begin shifting your attention and energy flow.

You are literally re-writing your life story.

You may think that this sounds great, but you might also have doubts – that’s normal and expected. It helps to begin by realising that you are already creating your reality, maybe not in ways that you find pleasing, but you are doing it.

If your thinking about how much your job sucks.. well chances are it does suck. If your thinking about how much you hate your body.. chances are you are going to continue to take self-sabotaging actions to make sure this continues to be true. Start to become aware that the thought always precedes the action.

All things begin in the mind.

Also begin to understand that you have the ability to tell a story other than what is happening right now. You can daydream right? Well its just like that but by writing and using affirmations you are bringing more awareness to the ‘dream.’

If all of this stuff is new to you – try your hardest to not get overwhelmed. There is nothing more important than directing your attention to good feeling thoughts. And I personally believe that the best time to do this is first thing in the morning!

If I can be more clear on anything I have mentioned in this blog or if you have any questions at all please do not hesitate to contact me or leave a comment. I talk about lots on the kinds of things on my Instagram and YouTube channel so be sure connect with me over there too.
